Torii Hunter knocked in three runs to help the Detroit Tigers top the Royals (9-4) in Kansas City. Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila each hit a homer for Detroit (16-9), which has won five straight. Justin Verlander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Tigers return home to open a four-game series against the Houston Astros. Game time is 7:08pm. The Grand Rapids Griffins advanced to the 2nd. Rd. of the Calder Cup Playoffs with a (5-3) win Friday night to close out the Abbotsford Heat. In college basketball news, the Big Ten and the Big East are set to make a major basketball announcement today. ESPN is reporting the two conferences will announce the Gavitt Tipoff Games today at Madison Square Garden. It will start in 2015-16 and run through 2020 with 16 teams and eight games every season. The challenge will honor Basketball Hall of Famer and Big East founder Dave Gavitt.
