The Detroit Tigers lost the first of a four game series to the White Sox (6-5) last night in Chicago. Victor Martinez hit his 15th. home run of the season and Eugenio Suarez and Miguel Cabrera each went yard, but it wasn't enough as Rick Porcello takes the loss, giving up six runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out four in five innings. Justin Verlander will get the start tonight for Detroit, while Chicago counters with John Danks. First pitch is 8:10pm. Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera will be the team's designated hitter until his hamstring issue issue is resolved.
In college hoops news, Tom Izzo and Michigan St. landed West Virginia University transfer Eron Harris, who will have 2 years of eligibility left after sitting out this season. Harris averaged 17.2 points per game last year as a sophomore for the Mountaineers. The Michigan State men's basketball team also announced yesterday that it will open the 2014-15 season on the road against Navy November 14th. The Spartans are part of the inaugural Veterans Classic at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The West Michigan Whitecaps are now in 1st. place in the Eastern Division after defeating South Bend (6-2) last night to complete a perfect 6-game homestand. The Caps will be in Midland tonight to take on the Loons. First pitch is 7:05pm. Plus, Whitecaps pitcher Chad Green was added to the Eastern Division All-Star roster yesterday due to injury. That gives the Caps a league-leading 7 players in the All-Star game for next Tuesday at Fifth-Third Ballpark.
