The United States' World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end after the Stars and Stripes dropped a (2-1) extra-time decision to Belgium in the Round of 16.  The two nations battled to a scoreless tie through regulation, but the Belgians scored in both the 93rd and 105th minutes to send the Americans home.  U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard had a sensational game with 16 saves.

Rick Porcello had another strong outing, pitching his second straight complete game shutout, as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Oakland Athletics (3-0) last night at Comerica Park.  Porcello notched his 11th win of the year, scattering four hits over nine innings and extending his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 25 and one third innings.  He is the first Detroit pitcher to throw back-to-back shutouts since Jack Morris in 1986.  The series finale will be this afternoon, the Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the hill, while Jesse Chavez will go for Oakland....first pitch is 1:08pm.

The Detroit Red Wings didn't make too much of a splash during the first day of free agency.  Yesterday, the team signed restricted free agent center Riley Sheahan to a 2-year - $1.9 million deal and unrestricted free agent defenseman Kyle Quincey to a 2-year $8.5 million contract.  The Wings also signed goalie Petr Mrazek to a 1-year extension and also inked Northville native Kevin Porter and Grosse Pointe native Andy Miele to contracts.  Porter and Miele will be assigned to Grand Rapids.

The Detroit Pistons have reportedly signed free agents Jodie Meeks and Cartier Martin to help with their three-point shooting.  Meeks, who played last season with the Lakers, was a second round pick by the Bucks in 2009 and also played with the 76ers.  Martin went undrafted in 2007 and has played with the Bobcats, Warriors, Wizards, Bulls and Hawks.  The signings can not be officially announced until July 10th.

Also, the West Michigan Whitecaps made it 5 wins in a row with a (12-4) win over Lansing last night at Fifth-Third Ballpark.  The Caps will host the Lugnuts again this evening - first pitch is set for 7pm.
