Germany is headed to the World Cup championship match after trouncing host nation Brazil (7-1) in yesterday's semifinal. Miroslav Klose scored the second goal for Germany making him the all-time World Cup goal-scoring leader with 16, surpassing Brazil's Ronaldo. Germany will face either Argentina or The Netherlands in Sunday's final. Those two will meet today in the other semifinal with coverage starting at 3:30pm right here on ESPN 96.1.
The Detroit Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak as they roared back from a five-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers (14-5) last night at Comerica Park. Five Tigers players had three hits, including Rajai Davis who had three RBI and Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter who each batted in two runs. Justin Verlander had a shaky first inning, but settled down and notched his eighth win of the year. In this afternoon's two-game series finale, Max Scherzer takes the mound for Detroit while Zack Greinke will go for LA. First pitch is 1:08pm this afternoon at Comerica Park.
In other Tigers news, outfielder Andy Dirks has started his rehab assignment with Class-A Lakeland. Dirks, who had been sidelined since he had back surgery in March, went one-for-three at the plate yesterday for the Flying Tigers. He is expected to stay with Lakeland for at least the next week before eventually moving up to Triple-A Toledo. Rick Porcello is not on track to make the American League All-Star team based on the final vote. Porcello is third in the standings in the final vote, which allows fans to vote for one of five players to make the All-Star team in both the American League and National League.
In Midwest League action, Kevin Ziomek had his four-game winning streak snapped last night as the Whitecaps lost to Bowling Green (3-1). West Michigan will take on Bowling Green on the road again tonight...first pitch is 8:05pm.
And finally, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Hewitt family in Grand Haven and the Buccaneers Basketball community as 9-year head varsity basketball coach Steve Hewitt passed away yesterday. He reportedly collapsed during an afternoon run at Hofma Park in Grand Haven Township. Hewitt was 50 years old. Hewitt, who worked as a counselor at Grand Haven High School, is survived by his wife, Kate, and three sons, Will, Cam and Drew.
