The American League beat the National League (5-3) last night in the Midsummer Classic in Minneapolis, securing home-field advantage for the American League in the upcoming World Series.  Big night for the Tigers All-Stars as Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first inning, the first Tigers player to hit a home run in an All-Star Game since Lou Whitaker in 1986.  Max Scherzer picked up the win, giving up one hit while striking out two in a scoreless fifth inning.  The last pitcher from Detroit to notch a win in an All-Star Game was Jim Bunning in 1957.  Also, Derek Jeter went 2-for-2 and scored a run in his final All-Star Game, his 14th appearance in the Midsummer Classic. 

The Detroit Pistons have added two more free agents to their roster as they signed guard D.J. Augustin and forward Caron Butler.  The 26-year-old Augustin has been in the league for six years and played last year with the Chicago Bulls where he averaged 14.9 points and 5 assists in 61 games.  Last season Butler spent time with the Milwaukee Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder and averaged 10.5 points and 4.1 rebounds in 56 games. 

The Red Wings have hired Tony Granato as an assistant coach.  Granato has spent the last 5 seasons as an assistant coach.  Granato has spent the last 5 seasons as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2002-04 and again from 2008-09. 

Michigan St. Rose Bowl defensive MVP Kyler Elsworth has found a new home field with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, signing a contract yesterday. 

The West Michigan Whitecaps are back in action tonight after a day off yesterday.  They'll open up a 6-game homestand with Peoria this evening at Fifth-Third Ballpark...first pitch is 7pm.
