The Detroit Tigers begin the second half of the season tonight as they host the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park. The Tigers are in first place in the Central Division, six and a half games ahead of second-place Kansas City and seven and a half games in front of Cleveland. Anibal Sanchez at (6-3) will get the start this evening for Detroit with first pitch set for 7:08pm.
Triple-A Toledo pitcher Drew VerHagen will make his major league debut for Detroit in the first game of tomorrow's doubleheader against the Indians at Comerica Park. In his last five starts for the Mud Hens, VerHagen allowed nine earned runs over 33 and one third innings and has a (6-7) record with a 3.67 ERA overall this season.
The Detroit Lions continue making changes to their roster ahead of their upcoming training camp. Yesterday they signed veteran guard Garrett Reynolds. Reynolds was drafted by Atlanta in 2009 and has played the last four years with the Falcons. Lions rookies report for training camp on July 22nd, while veterans are due at the team's Allen Park facility July 27th.
ESPN.com is reporting that the Detroit Pistons are exploring the possibility of trading forward Josh Smith. Citing anonymous sources, ESPN writer Marc Stein says the Pistons have reopened trade discussions with the Sacramento Kings about moving Smith.
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed right wings Mitch Callahan and Andrej Nestrasil to one-year contracts. Both played for the Grand Rapids Griffins last season.
And finally, the West Michigan Whitecaps have won 6 games in a row after a (3-1) victory over Peoria last night. Tonight it's another Tiger Friday at Fifth-Third Ballpark as 1968 World Series champion centerfielder Mickey Stanley will be in attendance. First pitch is set for 7pm.
