After a day off, the Detroit Tigers are back home to open a three-game series with the New York Yankees tonight at Comerica Park.  First pitch is 7:08pm and the match-up is Rick Porcello at (14-8) versus Brandon McCarthy (8-12).  This will also be Yankees Captain and Kalamazoo native Derek Jeters' final series in the Motor City.  Detroit is a game-and-a-half behind Kansas City in the AL Central, and a half-game behind Seattle for the 2nd Wildcard spot. 

The Michigan Wolverines will raise the curtain on their 2014 season this weekend.  The Wolverines will host Appalachian State Saturday at noon.  Coverage begins at 11am over on Newsradio WOOD 1300 & 106.9FM.  Michigan was upset at home by Appalachian State (34-32) back in 2007. 

The Michigan State Spartans hit the field on Friday night under the lights when they host Jacksonville State.  Kickoff is set for 7:30pm at Spartan Stadium. 

Pistons center Andre Drummond and the rest of USA Basketball will play one final exhibition game today ahead of the FIBA World Cup.  The Americans have already beaten Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico in exhibition games this month.  Team USA takes on Slovenia this afternoon at 2pm in Spain. 

And in Midwest League action, the Whitecaps lost (3-1) last night at South Bend, but congratulations are in order for West Michigan OF-Wynton Bernard who yesterday was named the 2014 Midwest League MVP!  Bernard leads the league with a .328 batting average  and 159 hits on the season.  Bernard becomes just the third Whitecap in franchise history to win the award....Robert Fick(1997)......Gorkys Hernandez(2007).
