The Detroit Lions blanked the Buffalo Bills (23-0) in their final preseason game last night in upstate New York.  QB Dan Orlovsky started for Detroit and finished 7-for-11, passing for 39 yards, while Kellen Moore took over midway through the second quarter and completed 17 of his 28 pass attempts for 172 yards and two touchdowns.  The Lions will open the regular season on Monday Night Football - Sept. 8 at home against Eli Manning and the New York Giants.  Also, Lions rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy is recovering after a successful surgical procedure to repair a core muscle injury.  The team has not put a timetable on when Van Noy will return. 

Mark Dantonio's Michigan State Spartans will open the 2014 season tonight under the lights at Spartan Stadium when they host Jacksonville State.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm. 

U-M football kicks off tomorrow at the Big House against Appalachian State.  Noon is the scheduled start time with pregame coverage beginning at 11am over on Newsradio WOOD 1300 and 106.9 FM. 

Also, last night the Central Michigan Chippewas beat Chattanooga in Mt. Pleasant (20-16).  Cooper Rush's 26-yard TD pass to Courtney Williams midway through the third quarter was the game-winner. 

Alex Avila's walk off single in the ninth inning powered the Detroit Tigers to a (3-2) win over the New York Yankees yesterday at Comerica Park.  The Tigers open a four game set with the White Sox in Chicago tonight.  Justin Verlander will get the start for Detroit...first pitch is 8:10pm.
