Rick Porcello threw his third shutout of the season, while Victor Martinez hit a grand slam to power the Detroit Tigers to a (6-0) win last night in Tampa Bay. Porcello scattered three hits and struck out four in a complete game victory, as the Tigers won their second straight. Martinez went two-for-three at the plate and ended the night with 5 RBI. This afternoon is the series finale with first pitch set for 1:10pm as newcomer David Price pitches for the first time against his former team, and Alex Cobb will take the hill for the Rays.
In other Tigers news, pitcher Justin Verlander may be back on the mound in Minnesota. Verlander is hoping to pitch one of the games of the doubleheader scheduled for Saturday against the Twins. Detroit has recalled pitcher Buck Farmer from Triple-A Toledo to start the other game.
The Detroit Lions hope defensive end Ziggy Ansah will be able to make his preseason debut tomorrow night at Ford Field against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ansah, who had offseason shoulder surgery, was activated from the physically unable to perform list ahead of last week's game against Oakland, but did not play. Game time is 7:30pm.
CBS Pittsburgh is reporting that former Spartan RB-Le'Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount and an unidentified female were charged with marijuana possession by Ross Township Police after a traffic stop yesterday afternoon. Bell, who was driving, has also been charged with a DUI.
In Midwest League action, the West Michigan Whitecaps successfully took 2 out of 3 in their series with Lansing, beating the Lugnuts (2-0) last night at Fifth-Third Ballpark. The Caps will open up a series with the Dayton Dragons tonight....first pitch is 7pm.
Tonight is the 7th. Annual Fanfest at GVSU's Lubbers Stadium. The event is 5-7pm and is FREE and open to the public with the #2-ranked Lakers football team holding a live practice from 7-8pm.
And finally, the Detroit Pistons will open their 2014 preseason games at the Palace against the Chicago Bulls October 7th. The club will also host Milwaukee on October 9th and Philadelphia on October 23rd.
