Portugal broke American hearts yesterday by pulling out a (2-2) draw against the U.S. men's national team with seconds to spare in each squad's second game at the World Cup in Brazil.  Cristiano Ronaldo fed a cross to the head of Silvestre Varela for a goal in extra time.  The U.S. had been given the lead off a goal from Clint Dempsey in the 81st minute.  The U.S. is now tied atop Group G with Germany with four points.  The teams will meet Thursday in the final match of the group round....a win or draw in that game will send Team USA to the knockout round of the World Cup. 

Max Scherzer tossed six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts as the Detroit Tigers rolled Cleveland (10-4) yesterday afternoon.  Scherzer improved to (9-3) with the win while Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBI.  The Tigers continue their nine-game road trip in Texas against the Rangers tomorrow night. 

The 2014-15 NHL regular season schedule is out.  The Red Wings begin the year with three straight home games.  Detroit hosts Boston on October 9th to get things underway and again on October 15th to end the stretch. 

Michigan St. football has a new member for its 2015 recruiting class.  Yesterday, the Spartans landed Ohio's Justice Alexander to a verbal commitment.  The defensive end also had offers from Tennessee, Ball State and Toledo among others. 

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly will be in Grand Rapids today at Blythfield Country Club for his annual Kelly Cares Foundation's Irish Eyes Golf Classic.  At the event, Brian and Paqui Kelly on behalf of the Kelly Cares Foundation will make a check presentation to the Hosford Family Scholarship Foundation.  The Hosford Family Scholarship Foundation is in honor of Jamie Hosford, a past Grand Valley State University five sport athlete who passed away from cancer in March at the age of 58.  The Hosford Family Scholarship Foundation will begin awarding scholarships in the Fall of 2015 to students from Rockford High School who are attending Grand Valley State University. 

The West Michigan Whitecaps fell to Ft. Wayne (4-2) yesterday....they are off today before opening up a series in Lansing against the Lugnuts tomorrow night.
