The owner of an apartment complex in Alger Heights is prohibited from owning rental property and fined on sexual harassment charges, a court said.
Federal prosecutors ordered Dale Vander Vennen, owner of Alger Meadows Apartment, to pay at least 13 female tenants $510,000. He's also required to pay $40,000 to the federal government in the case.
Vander Vennen was accused of sexual harassment for, among other things, giving benefits to tenants who engaged in sexual acts with him and took action against those who didn't.
The case extends beyond Vander Vennen to four companies that own and operated the apartment complex along Nelson Ave. in the Alger Heights neighborhood.
Vander Vennen agreed to the settlement, but denies any wrongdoing.
