The fire chief at Alpine Township said Friday his crews made the right call with its response to the blaze at Fox Pools.

The fire engulfed most of the building at 6411 Alpine Ave. shortly after the few workers inside the structure noticed the blaze.

The Alpine Township Fire Department decided to let the structure burn because of the environmental threat posed by pool chemicals. It was less of a threat to let some of those chemicals burn off in the air than to let them in the ground, they said.

Dave Klomparens, fire chief for the township, said his crews had a tough decision to make with the blaze.

"As much as we don't like to lose people's properties, it was just the right call to make," Klomparens told WOOD Radio news.

The fire chief said tackling the blaze was a challenge for responders, adding authorities more specialized in such incidents were called in to support.

No injuries were reported from the blaze.

The fire chief said the cause of the blaze was still under investigation, though there was no evidence of foul play.

"Arson is not suspected," he said in a statement Friday.
