Another landmark moment for the Grand Rapids Medical Mile.

Dr. Stephan Jovinge, of Sweden, will lead teams of researchers and clinicians at the Spectrum Health Frederik Meijer Heart & Vascular Institute and Van Andel Research Institute in an effort to stimulate regenerative medicine for heart disease.

"Van Andel Research Institute is truly world-class, and Spectrum Health is among the best in the country when it comes to clinical performance in the cardiovascular area," said Jovinge. "This is very much unexplored ground. I am pleased to be part of the Fred Meijer and Holton-Lemmon cardiovacular clinic."

Richard C. Breon, President & CEO, Spectrum Health told WOOD Radio having world-class researchers led by Dr. Jovinge will further Grand Rapids reputation as a medical destination.

"It is going to really put us on the map for this kind of research. I think you are going to see people drawn to this area who want to participate in this research and people who want to get care here. I think it will be a real magnet."

In addition to basic science research, Jovinge said he will work with physicians at the Frederik Meijer Heart & Vascular Institute to assist with their own development of clinical and translational research, including opportunities to publish and present on a national level.
