Michigan's Bears Are More Numerous

We have "fairly regular sightings every year" of black bear in West Michigan, according to the state's DNR which has been busy putting GPS tracking collars on the bears.

One DNR conservation officer told WOOD TV the young male bears are the ones moving a lot. One walked from Muskegon to Houghton Lake, a distance of 130 miles, in just one month.

But the bears still do it in the woods, and appear reluctant to come into the open. Their population movement into southern Michigan has been slower than the DNR expected
