There's agreement, Grand Rapids Griffins Coach Jeff Blashill is tops in the American Hockey League.
The team and the AHL announced today the 40 year old wins the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the league's outstanding coach. While the Griffins took the 2013 Calder Cup last season, this year's shifting roster due to Detroit Red Wing injuries found Grand Rapids ready for the task.
Blashill tells WOOD Radio he has been blessed with good players, good coaches and a good working relationship with the Detroit Red Wings. Awards, he says, are nice but he has more important things on his mind right now.
"What I would like to is win two games this weekend and try to get a number two seed in the western conference. That is the focus we've got right now. While I am certainly appreciative of this honor, it is a team honor."
The Griffins are second in the AHL Western Conference and are poised to take the Midwest Division title despite a season full of changes for the team. You'll hear Grand Rapids host the Lake Erie Monsters on WOOD Radio at 6:40 Friday night.
