Michigan Gay Marriages are "Valid", But Not "Recognized"

The Appeals Court ruling late yesterday that allows Michigan's "straight" definition of marriage to continue while the judge's ruling in favor of gay marriage is appealed does not change the marriages that happened Saturday.

Cooley Law School professor Curt Benson,  one of WOOD Radio's "The Lawyers" on Sundays,  says the marriages are valid as far as the federal government and the federal benefits are concerned.

But not for Michigan.  He says that would happen only with an change to our state's Constitution.  That would come only from a ruling from the US Supreme Court.

Benson says, "They probably won't decide it for another year and a half or so."
