Congressman Conyers May Learn His Fate Today
Posted May 23rd, 2014 @ 4:17am by Michigan Radio Network

Longtime Michigan Congressman John Conyers will learn two critical decisions today  in his quest to be on the ballot this year despite problems the Wayne County Clerk's Office found with the petitions his campaign circulated.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson will announce before noon her decision on Conyers' appeal of the clerk's office decision to disqualify him from the ballot.

Clerk’s office staffers determined that Conyers only collected 600 valid signatures - 400 short of the 1,000 required.

Later in the day, a U.S. District judge is expected to rule on key aspects of the Detroit Democrat's lawsuit challenging the legality of Michigan law requiring petition circulators to be registered voters in Michigan.

The 85-year old Conyers is one of the longest-serving members of the U.S .Congress, first elected to the House 50 years ago in 1964. He represents Michigan’s 13th district, including Detroit and several suburbs.
