Finding Alternatives to Gangs in Holland

Finding Alternatives to Gangs in Holland

Escape Ministries in Holland works with the city of Holland for a second year on what it calls the Youth Connections program.

It has summer jobs for kids, at $7.75 an hour, doing chores like painting and raking.

These kids are former gang members, and family of gang members.

The whole idea is to fill the void left when police rounded up the Latin Kings leaders and busted up the gang in the past two years.

"Escape" has former members of several gangs surprised to find they can work together in peace and make some money for their families.

The money comes from private and government organizations  and WOOD TV reports the city hopes to expand it year-round, instead of just summertime.
