Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it was joining forces with utility DTE Energy to build the state's largest solar array at its global headquarters.

"Ford has a long history of innovation and a deep commitment to sustainability," Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford Motor Co., said in a statement.

DTE is funding a project that envisions 360 covered parking spaces with 30 charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles. A solar array on top of the carport will generate about 1 megawatt of power at peak capacity, enough to meet the energy demands of around 158 households.

The partners say emissions saved by the facility are the equivalent of pulling 167 average passenger vehicles off the road.
