A former co-owner of a Portland funeral home has been found guilty of embezzling nearly $500,000 from the business.

40-year-old Marti Schrauben was found guilty in Ionia County Circuit Court yesterday (Monday) on all 26 counts including embezzlement, forgery and racketeering.

Prosecutors say Shrauben embezzled $500,000 from the business now known as Lehman Funeral Homes between 2007 and 2010.

They say Schrauben forged death certificates for people who were living and submitted fake claims to insurance companies. Schrauben allegedly submitted about 80 fake claims documents.

He also asked some customers to write checks for funerals and prepaid funerals to Schrauben Management, his personal business.

A date for his sentence hearing has not been set. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
