GVSU hikes tuition, but says it's still affordable

GrandValleyStateUniversity board members raised tuition rates Friday, but say it's by the lowest dollar amount in years.

"We are concerned with quality and affordability for our students," Shelley Padnos, chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, said in a statement. "This budget achieves a balance that will help students graduate and find jobs."

Trustees voted to increase tuition by $149 per year, bringing the annual tuition to $10,752 for a full-time Michigan student enrolled on an undergraduate program.

Padnos said that while a university education is expensive, students and their families should look at the dollar amount rather than year-on-year increases.

The tuition increase is the lowest in the last 10 years and keeps the university in the lower half of all Michigan universities.

In the last 10 years, close to 30 percent of all college graduates in Michigan graduated from GrandValleyStateUniversity.
