More than 11,000 people applied for Medicaid Tuesday, the first day for qualified Michiganders to apply for the Medicaid Healthy Michigan plan.

The Healthy Michigan plan, an expansion of Medicaid, is aimed at Michigan residents whose incomes are 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

State officials reported, as of 4 p.m., 11,848 had applied with 4,152 automatically approved without the need for any further state intervention.

Officials have estimated that as many as 320,000 Michiganders will sign up for the program in the first year, and eventually up to 470,000 will be enrolled.
