Holland city fire fighters were called to 850 Ottawa Avenue for smoke coming from the roof of South Shore Middle School as a result of a lightning strike.

Responding units were committed to two other incidents at the time this call was dispatched however did arrive on scene within 7 minutes. Upon arrival personnel identified that smoke was coming from the roof and was present inside a small gym on the second floor of the structure.

Personnel were able to access the roof and locate the fire within minutes of arrival and confined the majority of the damage to a small area of the roof. The interior did sustain some minor damage to the ceiling below the fire area. Damage limited and estimated to be less than $5,000.

Fire personnel were on scene for about 1.5 hours to vent smoke from the structure and implement other property conservation measures. Assistance during the incident was received from the Holland Police Department and American Medical Response
