An Ionia County Central Dispatch worker has been awarded for his work using the Smart911 service to find a 911 caller stuck in the snow in January.
After taking a 911 call but hearing no one on the phone, John Wiechenthal used GPS to find the caller's approximate location and searched for the caller's number on Facebook.
He found the caller's name and a picture of that individual's vehicle and then used the Smart911 system to send the caller a text message. They communicated that way, and Wiechenthal learned the individual's vehicle was stuck in the snow and he guided police to the right location to help.
Wiechenthal's actions earned a SmartSave Award.
