Comedienne Joan Rivers has died, her daughter Melissa confirmed
Rivers was rushed to a New York hospital last week after her heart stopped during surgery on her vocal chords. She was put on life support, but was removed earlier today.
Her daughter said in a statement her mother passed away peacefully around 1 p.m. EST. She was surrounded by family and friends.
"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," the statement read.
Born in 1933, she started work in the fashion industry before moving into show business. A sometimes host of the Tonight Show, the stand-up comedic later became a pop culture staple.
