Mayor George Heartwell's office announced Monday he'd take part in the annual Labor Day event dubbed Grand Crossings.

"You don’t have to drive all the way to the Mackinac Bridge to join the annual Labor Day bridge walk," the mayor's office said Monday.

Starting 8:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, from Ah-Nab-Awen Park in downtown Grand Rapids, participants are invited to walk the bridges spanning the Grand River.

The route is as long as five miles, which is the relative equivalent of crossing the Mackinac Bridge.

No sign-up is necessary and parking is free at city lots near Scribner.
