MDOT Watches Bridges for Ice Jam Problems

MDOT Watches Bridges for Ice Jam Problems
Posted March 20th, 2014 @ 7:43am by WOOD Radio News Team

With a Flood Watch in effect in Kent and Ottawa Counties through Friday morning,  large chunks of ice were reported upstream of Comstock Park and there was a reported ice jam at the M-21 bridge in Ada.

Michigan's Department of Transportation is on special alert for the bridges as the spring melt breaks up the ice and washes it downstream.

MDOT Director Kirk Steudle told WOOD TV that ice piling up around the piers of a bridge can bring so much pressure from the moving water, that it can push the bridge off its foundation.

He says if you suspect a problem, call to report it.
