Military officials said Lt. Col. Morris Fontenot was the pilot killed in the crash of an F-15 in the mountains of Virginia this week.

The lieutenant, nicknamed Moose, was a decorated combat veteran with 17 years flying experience. He was on a routine mission with the Massachusetts Air National Guard when his plane went down earlier this week.

State, local and federal officials were scouring the ground in the remote Virginia mountains in search of the pilot.

No munitions were on board the F-15 when it crashed. There were no injuries on the ground reported.

Fontenot reported an emergency when the flight was flying at above 30,000 feet.
