An F-15C aircraft crashed in Virginia after the pilot reported an in-flight emergency, an Air National Guard unit in Massachusetts said.
"Information on this incident is developing rapidly and we are not going to speculate on what occurred or the status of the pilot," Col James Keefe, 104th Fighter Wing commander, said in a statement Wednesday.
The Air National Guard said it lost radio contact with the F-15C around 9 a.m. There were reports of an explosion and dark smoke seen over the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.
Local officials on the scene confirmed the crash.
"We are hopeful that the pilot is okay, and the pilot will be in our thoughts and prayers as the events of this incident unfold," Keefe said.
