Waterfront property owners, downtown businesses and the city of Muskegon will open up temporary dock space for Muskegon Lake boaters in an attempt to attract activity to downtown this boating season.
Published reports say that the plan to dedicate six shopper docks for temporary tie-up at a small fee will get a trial run this year. Boaters can come into Hartshorn Marina and tie up for a few hours to walk the Lakeshore Trail or patronize businesses and activities downtown.
Hartshorn Marina has 134 large slips and the nearby small-boat basin has another 30 smaller slips.
Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce President Cindy Larsen says other Lake Michigan waterfront communities already provide such access, including Saugatuck, Grand Haven, Traverse City and Charlevoix.
