The National Science Foundation helps Michigan State University and other researchers promote a recently-established field of study, macroecology.

An MSU student's video about the field is featured on a National Science Foundation website.

It says that ecologists used to study small, well-defined areas, but in order to understand global issues like climate change, land use,  and invasive species, much more data must be crunched.

The video says this is enabled by access to supercomputers that did not exist just a few years ago. Researchers are using large data sets collected by government agencies.
