The Nuclear Regulatory Commission told a public meeting Thursday night in South Haven that the Palisades nuclear plant's safety is much better than it was a few years ago.

The only problem reported is a lack of communication from management leading people in one department thinking they might be disciplined for reporting safety issues.

Anti-nuclear lobbies, such as "Beyond Nuclear", continue to disagree that Palisades should continue in operations.

Spokesman Kevin Klemp told WOOD TV that the reactor is "way past retirement age and is at risk of breaking down."
