The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is confident the safety culture within the Palisades nuclear power plant in southwest Michigan is improving. At the same time, the federal agency notes there are still issues that need to be addressed.

Region III Administrator Cynthia Pederson says after adding 1,000 hours in 2012 to the normal 2,000 hours of inspections at the plant, the NRC believes the facility in Van Buren County's Covert Township has corrected its performance issues.

Though the normal level of inspection is occurring, Pederson says if things change the NRC will enhance it. Currently the Commission is confident in the plant's safety performance.

Pederson says Palisades will continue to receive the detailed inspections used by the NRC at all plants across the country.
