Old Country Game Comes to Northern Michigan

Posted September 2nd, 2014 @ 8:18am by The Associated Press

A tournament featuring a game that has its roots in Sweden is coming to the northern Michigan community of Alanson.

The Petoskey News-Review reports that Alan Dickinson is organizing the Great Lakes Kubb Championship 2014 on Sept. 27. He says the game is becoming popular in the Upper Midwest states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. He wants to see that extend to Michigan. He learned of the game about nine years ago and started creating the wooden pieces used in the lawn game.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund.

The game is nicknamed "Viking Chess'' and is described as a combination of bowling, bocce and horseshoes. Teams will have a minimum of three players and a maximum of six.
