Scientists have identified a virus that has been found in hogs and newborn piglets on over 90 Michigan farms.

Jennifer Holton is Communications Director for the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and told WOOD Radio the virus is a major concern for our swine industry.

"We have had 93 farm premises with numerous animals impacted. That number is current as of April 9th."

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus is non-transferable to humans. Holton says consumers should not be worried about the pork products in their freezer or on store shelves.

"There is absolutely no food safety or public health concerns. This has nothing to do with your Easter hams and people should feel free to eat pork products."

The PED Virus was first diagnosed in the United States in 2013.
