The purpose of the Silver Line transit system is to encourage job growth and build momentum for another development, The Rapid CEO said Tuesday.

The Silver Line, Grand Rapids answer to light rail, makes its debut Aug. 25. The route design, with designated lanes during the morning and afternoon commutes, is meant to connect Grand Rapids, Kentwood and Wyoming with Division Ave. as the main corridor.

Peter Varga, chief executive officer of The Rapid, said the primary aim is to spur job development in the community. The second objective is to expand the project to the surrounding communities.

Stretching the project out to Grand Valley State University could draw in federal money based on the Silver Line development.

"Because on our success on the Silver Line being on time and on budget, I think we'll have a good opportunity [for federal support]," Varga said.
