SS Badger Ready to Sail into Spring

Posted May 6th, 2014 @ 8:55am by The Associated Press

The historic SS Badger carferry opens its season May 16 with new combustion controls that will enable it to burn coal more efficiently, which should mean less coal less ash produced.

The Ludington Daily News reports  that the more than $1 million upgrade was part of a two-year process for the last coal-burning, steam-fired vessel in the U.S. Owner Lake Michigan Carferry is working toward stopping the ferry's coal ash discharge into Lake Michigan.

The 410-foot Badger operates between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It will run this season under a consent decree with the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice that requires the Badger to reduce coal ash discharge this season and end it before the 2015 season.

This year's season ends Oct. 26.
