The University of Michigan and Michigan State University are among the top 30 universities in the nation according to an annual ranking that measures what colleges and universities "are doing for the country."

In Washington Monthly’s 2014 National Universities Rankings, U-M was ranked 13th while MSU came in at number 29.The publication analyzed the 277 higher education institutions based on whether theyre improving social mobility, producing research and promoting public service. Of the 14 universities in the Big Ten, three others also cracked the top 30 this year: Wisconsin is 17th, Ohio State is next at 18 and Illinois is 26th.

The number one-ranked school, for the fifth straight year, was the University of California-San Diego.
