The Michigan Department of Transportation said Tuesday it's going to try a "zipper" system to get traffic moving through construction areas.

Starting at 8 p.m. and running through Friday morning, MDOT is closing lanes on eastbound and westbound I-96 from 1 mile west of M-50 to the line separating Kent from Ionia County.

The department said delays have been "significant" and the system will use a late-merge "zipper" system to keep traffic moving.
