State lawmakers plan to push for answers from the Department of Human Services as to how the system apparently failed the 12-year-old boy charged in the stabbing death of a 9-year-old.

Jamarion Lawhorn is accused of killing Connor Verkerke on a Kentwood playground on August 4th, but State Senator Judy Emmons says by state law he should have been removed from his home last year due to abuse. Lawhorn's mother gave up parental rights to two girls in 1999 in New York state, and Child Protective Services workers determined she and her boyfriend abused Jamarion last year.

Emmons chairs the Senate Families, Seniors and Human Services Committee and plans joint hearings with the House.
