Covington Catholic High School Closed Due To Security Concerns

Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky was forced to close on Tuesday due to security concerns after a group of students became the center of controversy following their interaction with a Native American elder near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. over the weekend.

“After meeting with local authorities, we have made the decision to cancel school and be closed on Tuesday, January 22, in order to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff,” the school’s principal, Robert Rowe, wrote in a letter to parents.

“All activities on campus will be cancelled for the entire day and evening. Students, parents, faculty and staff are not to be on campus for any reason. Please continue to keep the Covington Catholic Community in your prayers.”

When the video first went viral, the teens were excoriated by people online and accused of harassing and taunting Nathan Phillips, a Native American Vietnam veteran, while he was chanting and drumming. However, that narrative fell apart when other videos showed a group of Hebrew Israelites harassing and taunting the students before Phillips walked over to the group.

Following the incident, Nick Sandmann, the teen who was seen staring Phillips down as he played the drum inches from the teen's face, received death threats and many called for the students to be identified, shamed, and assaulted.
