GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police say a 15-year-old boy has been charged with reckless discharge resulting in death in connection with a fatal shooting on June 12th.
Officers were called to a home in the 700 block of North Avenue near More Street late, that night and found a 15-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the head. They said My'asia Johnson died the next morning at a hospital
Police Chief Eric Winstrom called it a "truly senseless death". He said the gun was illegally possessed.
“This is a truly senseless death,” said Chief Eric Winstrom said in a GRPD news release. “Everyone should be talking to the young people in their life about the very real and tragic consequences of illegally possessed guns. One young life was taken, and another young life will be forever impacted. We, as a community, need to step up and do everything we can to change the culture that puts these guns in the hands of our children. While it won’t take away the pain for Myasia’s loved ones, we can work together to spare other families from a similar loss.”
Police said that, based on the circumstances, a safe storage investigation was not applicable in this case.
The GRPD said Mugisha Mapenzi is being charged as a juvenile.
