Grand Rapids Public Schools Extends Superintendent Roby's Contract to 2027

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) Board of Education has approved a one-year contract extension for Superintendent Leadriane Roby, extending her leadership through June 30, 2027. The board voted to approve the extension, which Roby herself requested, during their meeting on Monday, February 10.

Dr. Roby has been at the helm of Michigan's fifth-largest school district since 2020, when she took on the role during the challenging early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under her leadership, the district has implemented significant changes aimed at improving educational outcomes and facilities.

"Rather than standing still, we pushed forward by launching a new Strategic Plan and Facilities Master Plan that set a bold course for the future," Roby said in a statement shared with local media.

One of Roby's major initiatives has been the "Reimagine GRPS with Us!" program, a comprehensive long-term plan approved in 2021 that includes new construction projects, district-wide renovations, and the closure of several schools. These changes are part of a broader strategy to modernize the district's infrastructure and improve educational offerings.

In her statement, Roby indicated that she is looking ahead to an eventual transition of leadership. "I am honored to keep building on this momentum as we prepare for a strong handoff to our next superintendent, so this progress continues without interruption," she said.

The board meeting also addressed another leadership position within the district. Four candidates were selected to interview for the vacancy left by former Trustee Arick Davis's resignation. Robert Hovenkamp, Ismalis Nuñez, Raynard Ross, and Erika VanDyke will be interviewed at a special meeting scheduled for February 18 at 6 p.m. at GRPS University.

The district's website highlights several recent achievements under Roby's leadership, including partnerships with the Grand Rapids Symphony and continued implementation of the district's strategic plan.
