Some Social Security recipients will receive two payments this October due to a scheduling quirk, but it is not an extra payment. The Social Security Administration (SSA) typically disburses Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments on the first of each month. However, when the first falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are sent earlier.
In October, SSI recipients will receive payments on Wednesday (October 1) and again on October 31. This scheduling means that the November payment will arrive early, as November 1 is a Saturday.
Approximately 7.4 million recipients receive SSI benefits, and this double payment in October is part of the regular schedule. The SSA has also announced that SSI payments will be issued twice in the same month one more time in 2025.
Additionally, the SSA is transitioning to electronic payments, discontinuing paper checks as part of a federal mandate. Recipients are encouraged to set up electronic payment methods by contacting the SSA if assistance is needed.
