Kent Co Board authorizes grant-seeking for land surrounding Cannonsburg

CANNON CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Kent County Board of Commissioners has agreed to pursue a state grant that would help the county buy 160 prime acres surrounding the Cannonsburg Recreation and Ski Area.

Assistant Kent County Administrator Lori Latham tells WOOD Radio the county commission adopted a resolution this morning for the Parks Department to apply for a Michigan DNR Trust Fund grant of up to 3-point-2 million dollars.

"And if the grant is approved, then the grant would come back to the Board of Commissioners to appropriate any required matching funds," Latham said. "And we don't expect that any construction will occur yet this calendar year."

The land would give the county an opportunity to add outdoor recreational activities, such as snow sports, a nature trail and more.

"The Cannonsburg Recreation Area is obviously a four-season park that allows for biking, hiking, runners and nature enthusiasts, etcetera, to enjoy this area," Latham said.

The county had considered the possibility of purchasing the recreation area itself, but the state grant funding would not be allowed under that circumstance.
