HOLLAND (WOOD-AM) - A junior at Hope College was fatally hit by a train Saturday near 10th Street in Holland, the school's president said.
She's been identified as Jennifer Kasunick of Bay Village, Ohio.
Her service dog survived.
The Holland Department of Public Safety said says she was unconscious and not breathing when first responders arrived on the scene. They attempted life-saving measures, to no avail. Police add that the train signals were activated for the approaching train. They say Jennifer stopped just east of the tracks but apparently did not realize how close she was to the tracks. She was clipped by the passing train.
"Almost everyone on campus knew Jennifer," President Matt Scogin said on social media. "And to know her was to love her. Her joyful spirit was a constant source of warmth and light - especially in Phelps Hall, where she served as an RA alongside her service dog Rowdy, who survived."
A police investigation is ongoing.
