Mel Trotter Ministries, Next Steps hold ceremony for 'tiny home' community

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Some homeless people will get a chance to transition into a better life at Hope Village in Grand Rapids.

That will be a 16-home community on Garden Street at Division Avenue, once the homes are built. At noon Thursday, a ceremony was held at the adjacent Next Step West Michigan, which is partnering in the project with Mel Trotter Ministries. The "tiny home" community will feature homes with living space of 530 square feet or less.

Previously homeless people will be given an opportunity to earn a living and change their lives.

A wall was raised on the development's first home.

"It will be one of those solutions to help people to not have to live in a shelter, but actually live in a home," Mel Trotter president and C-E-O Chris Palusky said on West Michigan's Morning News.

A nearly $1 million state grant is helping to fund the project. It will be done in stages.

"We believe that we can finish these first 10 (houses) by the end of this year. And hopefully, we can even complete more," Palusky said.

The project is a joint venture with Next Step West Michigan, which is adjacent to the site and a partner in the project.
