Allegan city leaders are considering eliminating the police department and entering a contract with the Allegan County Sheriff's Department.
The city manager says they are anticipating a $14.2 million shortfall over the next 10 years.
The main option for saving money is getting rid of the police department and having the sheriff's department patrol the city.
Allegan city manager Joel Dye says it would save the city $750,000 in the first year and $500,000 per year after that.
Dye says in theory each member of the police department would be offered a position at the sheriff's office.
Allegan Police Chief Jay GIbson says the decision would have more impacts than just budget savings.
