GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson John Richard says he wants drivers in work zones to pay attention and stop impeding the zipper merge.
"Vigilante lane blockers, as we call them, in zipper merge work zones - it's insane why people think they can block traffic and take it upon themselves to do traffic control," Richard told WOOD-TV. "It's lunacy."
State police also say it's against the law for motorists to block traffic because they feel vehicles are cutting in front of them.
Both agencies say, when everyone is cooperating, the zipper merge is the quickest and most-efficient way to get through a lane closure.
