Non-profit eyes former SE GR pickle factory site

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - The former Heinz pickle factory building in southeast Grand Rapids will soon become an entrepreneurship hub.

The Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation, which was founded by Justin Beene, is at the head of the $20 million plan.

Plans call for the vacant factory to be converted into co-working space with a restaurant and other amenities.

"We have lots of organizations and nonprofits in Grand Rapids but the normative way that I say people actually move out of poverty is through business, through entrepreneurship, through innovation, through good-paying jobs and so we really hope to be able to facilitate that in this building," Beene said.

Beene says $14 million is already committed to the project. The organization will crowdfund the remaining $6 million.
